When do I need to re-feed?

The nutrients in SYBASoil will run out in ~6 months on average.

We will advice you on the right fertiliser after doing our plant scan.

When do I repot?

We recommend repotting once any of these things happen:

  • You see roots growing out of the bottom of the pot
  • The soil dries very quickly between watering
  • The plant is top-heavy and wants to fall over
  • Roots are pushing the plant up and out of the container
  • Every 1 to 2 years

What can I expect when using your products?

94.2% of customers report visibly stronger roots& leaf growth within a few weeks.

You will also notice that watering becomes a lot easier due to having the right soil structure.

Why is the soil peat-free?

We don't think peat is so neat!

It becomes too compact over time, leading to a state where it no longer absorbs water.

That's why we opt for coconut fiber and worm castings, keeping your potting soil delightfully airy and usable for much longer. Much more environmentally friendly in its use & less CO2!

🍌 The Perfect Banana Tree Soil for Healthy Growth & Happy Plants

How Do I Use These Products for My Banana Tree?

Banana trees — technically Musa species — are fast-growing, bold, and tropical. While most people associate them with sprawling plantations, they’re actually excellent container plants too — especially dwarf varieties. But here’s the key: they grow fast and drink a lot, which means they need a soil mix that retains moisture, drains freely, and feeds consistently. That’s where our Calathea & Maranta Mix comes in.

To pot or repot your banana plant, choose a large container with excellent drainage. Bananas grow quickly and need room both above and below ground. Fill the bottom of your container with Calathea & Maranta Mix. Position the root ball in the center, ensuring the base of the stem is slightly above the final soil level. Fill around it, press lightly to stabilize the plant, and water thoroughly.

This mix can also be used in raised beds or greenhouses for outdoor bananas in warmer climates. It’s especially ideal for varieties like Musa dwarf cavendish, Musa basjoo, or Musa zebrina, which grow well in controlled or semi-outdoor environments.

How Does Calathea & Maranta Mix Work for Banana Trees?

Banana trees need a balance of air and moisture at the root level. Too dry, and they wilt fast. Too wet, and the roots can rot. Our Calathea & Maranta Mix was created to serve moisture-loving but sensitive root systems — which makes it perfect for bananas too.

Here’s how each ingredient supports your banana plant:

Coco coir – Acts as a moisture-regulating base. It holds water without becoming soggy and provides soft structure for fast root expansion. Banana roots thrive in evenly moist soil, and coco coir keeps that balance just right.

Vermiculite – Holds onto moisture and nutrients, slowly releasing them back to the plant. Vermiculite works especially well with banana trees because it helps buffer against underwatering in hot conditions.

Perlite – Enhances drainage and keeps the soil light and aerated. Banana roots need oxygen, especially during rapid growth. Perlite ensures the mix stays breathable, even with frequent watering.

Worm castings – Provide a steady supply of organic nutrients and beneficial microbes. Castings improve leaf color, stem strength, and overall plant vitality without overfeeding — especially useful for potted banana trees.

Lava gravel – Adds bulk and stability to the mix. It promotes drainage and contributes minerals like magnesium and iron, while also preventing soil compaction over time — critical for fast-growing species like Musa.

Activated carbon – Helps cleanse the root zone by absorbing impurities, supporting healthier roots, and promoting microbial balance. This is especially helpful in container environments where water and fertilizer can build up over time.

Organic nutrients – Deliver slow-release support tailored for foliage-heavy plants. Banana trees need ongoing access to nitrogen, potassium, and trace minerals to support their dramatic leaf production and, if conditions allow, fruiting.

Together, these ingredients create a soil that’s moisture-rich, breathable, nutrient-dense, and strong enough to support one of the fastest-growing plants you can keep at home.

The Original Habitat of Banana Trees

Banana trees originate from the warm, humid tropics of Southeast Asia and the Western Pacific. In the wild, they grow in lowland rainforests and river valleys where the air is thick with moisture and the soil is rich, loamy, and consistently damp — but never waterlogged.

These environments feature a constant supply of organic matter from decaying plants, excellent drainage from loose volcanic or silty soils, and shade from taller canopy trees. Banana plants evolved to push up fast through these layers and soak up light — which is why they grow so rapidly and require such a consistent water and nutrient supply.

Our Calathea & Maranta Mix mimics those conditions perfectly. With its moisture-regulating base, light structure, and gentle nutrition, it gives your banana tree a similar environment to what it would find on a tropical forest floor — even if it’s sitting in your living room or greenhouse.

How to Care for Banana Trees

Banana trees aren’t high-maintenance, but their rapid growth means they need consistency. Here’s how to give your Musa plant what it wants:

Light: Banana trees need bright light to grow — ideally full sun or strong indirect light. Indoors, place them near a south- or west-facing window. Outdoors, full sun is best. If your banana is stretching or producing smaller leaves, it may need more light.

Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist, especially during warm months. Water deeply when the top 2–3 cm feels dry, but don’t let the plant sit in standing water. In winter, reduce watering slightly as growth slows.

Feeding: Although your mix contains organic nutrients and worm castings, banana trees benefit from supplemental feeding during peak growing season. Use a foliage-friendly fertilizer (rich in nitrogen and potassium) in spring and summer.

Humidity: Banana trees love humidity. If your space is dry, mist the leaves, use a pebble tray, or place a humidifier nearby — especially in winter when indoor air tends to be drier.

Pruning: Remove yellowing or damaged leaves regularly to keep energy focused on new growth. If your banana produces pups (baby shoots), they can be left to grow or divided and repotted once they have their own roots.

Potting: Banana trees grow fast and need room. Repot yearly or when roots start to circle in the container. Always use fresh Calathea & Maranta Mix to replenish nutrients and structure.

With the right mix and a bit of care, your banana tree can become a lush, leafy centerpiece — or even produce fruit if conditions are right. Our Calathea & Maranta Mix provides the perfect base to support that fast, dramatic growth while keeping roots healthy and stress-free.
