Vermiculite Improves Moisture Retention and Soil Texture in Every Mix

Vermiculite is the moisture-loving plant’s best friend. This lightweight substrate enhances water and nutrient retention while improving soil texture and airflow. Whether you're growing tropical houseplants, starting seeds, or experimenting with mushroom cultivation, it is a versatile, all-natural solution that supports healthier root systems and balanced growth.

At Sybotanica, we offer high-quality vermiculite for houseplants in convenient, ready-to-use bags sourced only from suppliers who meet our strict sustainability standards. It’s clean, consistent, and easy to mix into any growing medium—perfect for both beginners and expert growers alike.

What Is Vermiculite, and Why Use It?

Vermiculite is an expanded mineral that forms when certain silicate minerals are heated until they puff up like tiny sponges. The resulting granules are ultra-absorbent, soft, and long-lasting. When mixed into soil, this soil conditioner increases its ability to retain water and nutrients without becoming compacted or soggy.

Key Benefits:

  • High moisture retention and slow-release hydration
  • Enhances nutrient retention for consistent plant feeding
  • Supports strong root development and plant stability
  • Lightens heavy soils and boosts overall soil structure
  • Sterile and safe for use in seed starting mix and propagation

Because vermiculite holds both water and nutrients, it's ideal for tropical plants, young seedlings, or cuttings that need steady hydration to develop roots. It also prevents rapid drying, which is especially useful for plant parents who forget the occasional watering.

Ideal for Propagation and Seed Starting

Use vermiculite on its own or blend it into your propagation mix to create the ideal rooting environment. Its natural sponginess makes it perfect for plant propagation, allowing moisture to remain near the stem while still providing air to the roots. Whether you’re rooting cuttings in water or soil, this product supports fast, healthy growth in a clean, sterile medium.

When added to a seed starting mix, this product helps seeds stay moist long enough to sprout without risking mold or overwatering. It’s also gentle on delicate roots and doesn’t compress like peat or bark-based materials.

Vermiculite vs. Perlite: What’s the Difference?

Although they’re often used side by side, vermiculite and perlite serve different roles in soil. Vermiculite absorbs and retains more water, making it the better choice for plants that thrive in consistently moist environments. It also feels softer, and unlike drainage-improving perlite, won’t break down into irritating dust.

If you're growing calatheas, alocasias, or marantas—or simply want to retain more moisture in your mix—vermiculite is the right soil amendment.

Socially responsible production

At Sybotanica we not only want to make plants happy, but people happy as well. In our production team we exclusively hire people with a distance from the workforce, and help them rehabilitate to the normal working life.

Take Peter for example:

Peter has been with Sybotanica since the 1st hour, and has now been promoted to head of production & a permanent contract! Where he was the first employee, he now manages a team of 3 production workers.

What makes this achievement even more impressive is that Peter achieved all this with only 10% visibility! 🕶️ With a few minor adjustments to his working environment, Peter is able to perform his job 100%.

Peter has now been through two moves and knows all the ins & outs of Sybotanica. He can even feel by the potting soil which variety it is. That's quite a challenge with 16 different mixes!

We are confident that Peter will keep production running smoothly in the coming years too! 💪

FAQ

What is vermiculite made from?
Similar to perlite, vermiculite comes from heated volcanic glass. It holds moisture better than perlite.

Have a different question? Get in contact

  • What:

Soil improver that holds water & nutrients, and slowly releases them to the plant

  • How much:

Add 20-30% to your SYBASoil mix

  • For which plants:

Plants who like moist soil, like Alocasia, Calathea's & Maranta's.

Why THIS Vermiculite compared to others?

Clean vermiculite that is consistent in sizing and has quality structure & water retaining capabilities

Origin of our Vermiculite

We mine our Vermiculite in South Africa, after which it is transported in its unpopped form.

Vermiculite expands upon heating, which happens when it arrives in The Netherlands. The unpopped vermiculite is heated with gas to its final airy & light form.

While the use of gas is not ideal, vermiculite lasts very long unless high pressure is applied.
Because of its longevity, we believe using vermiculite is a conscious choice.
Plus, you don't beat the unmatched quality it offers in keeping plants happy.

Our vermiculite is RHP-certified from the mines right to the production facility. This ensures quality and sustainable production.
